This course introduces the fundamentals of robot engineering and computer programing with Lego Mindstorms Ev3. Lego Mindstorms EV3 is a programmable robotics construction series that gives you the power to build and program your own Lego robots. Their education set includes– motors, sensors, programmable brick (P-brick), cables, remote control and technic elements – to create robots that walk, talk, move and do whatever you want them to. Lego Mindstorms Ev3 program software is based on Labview, the industry-leading graphical programming language. Which provides users with drag and drop interface for programming.
Throughout the course, students will understand how servo motors, sensors and simple machine mechanisms are used in robots and vehicles. Every lesson student will build a Lego robot using Lego technic elements, motors, sensors and programmable brick. After building the robot, students will use Lego Mindstorms Ev3 software to program their robots. Each lesson has a few challenges and students will be programming their robots to solve those challenges.
This course provides the students with computational thinking skills through solving real-world problems, planning skills through prototyping and experimenting, imagination and creativity through the building and modifying the robot according to the challenges, programming skills through creating algorithms (a series of ordered steps) for the robot to solve the challenges.
After this course, students are able to build their own lego robot and program it using Lego Mindstorms Ev3 program, with this knowledge gained they can even take part in the FIRST LEGO League. FIRST LEGO League is an international competition organized by FIRST and the LEGO Group for elementary and middle school students. FIRST LEGO League is the robotics competition involves designing and programming LEGO Mindstorms robots to complete tasks.
Prior to this course, students should have experience in building with LEGO blocks and basic computer skills like the ability to use mouse and keyboard.
